An exquisite antique French 18k gold medal signed A.S. HARDEN, dating to the immediate post-WWI/early 1920s period.

The obverse features a high-relief profile of a heroic Gallic figure wearing an elaborate winged helmet adorned with a beast motif—a classic national motif blending imagery of Marianne, ancient Gaul, and heroic resolve. The reverse depicts the proud Coq Gaulois (Gallic rooster) framed by mistletoe and encircled by the Latin inscription "GESTA DEI PER FRANCOS" ("The deeds of God through the Franks"), referencing Guibert of Nogent’s early 12th-century chronicle of the First Crusade.

This piece is a deeply evocative expression of French national identity, artfully uniting ancient Gaulish heritage, medieval chivalric history, and early 20th-century patriotic symbolism. The heroic Gaulish aesthetic closely mirrors famous monuments of the era, such as Ernest Révillon’s 1920 Barbizon war memorial honoring French soldiers of the Great War.

Far more than a decorative pendant, this piece is a wearable, miniature monument to French historical identity.

Size: 15/16" just under an inch in diameter, so it’s the perfect charm-size medal pendant, with a hefty weight for its size
