Meet this rare early 17th century enamel gold ring set with table cut diamond and rubies! At over 400 years old, this ring is the oldest but most fascinating piece from my personal collection!!

The table cut is the oldest/primitive diamond cutting style that gained its popularity throughout the Renaissance period (14th-17th centuries). The rough diamonds that were available in the renaissance all came from the diamond mines in India. Precious stones were acquired almost exclusively from long-distance trade from the East and rubies were mostly sourced from India, Ceylon, and Burma.

The beauty and charm of this ring can be easily associated with those found in museum displays. We also often see these rings in paintings from this period. So, it is my extreme fortune to acquire one having survived such a long history, yet remain in a phenomenal condition. It is a second-to-none treasure and high-end investment piece for someone who has a deep appreciation for old historical jewelry.

Specifics of the ring: This gold ring comprises a slender D-section hoop with floral detailing to the shoulders, ellipsoid domed bezel with black enamel rosette detailing to the rim, bezel with eight inset rectangular rubies surrounding a table-cut diamond.

Era: early 17th century/Jacobean Era. The Jacobean era refers to the period in English and Scottish history that coincides with the reign of James VI of Scotland (1567–1625). The Jacobean era succeeds the Elizabethan era and precedes the Caroline era. The Jacobean era is also characterized by a flourishing of the arts, architecture, and literature, with subtle changes from the previous Elizabethan period. It should not be forgotten that at this time William Shakespeare wrote some of his most important works, such as 'King Lear', 'Macbeth,' and 'The Tempest'. In the Jacobean era there was an English transition from the styles of the Renaissance to those of the Baroque period. This transition can be seen in some aspects of fashion, such as furniture or needlework. An observer can see the simplicity of the Elizabethan era change by gaining adornment and excess.

Similar ring examples can be found in Catalogue No. 40. "Cycles of Life: Rings From the Benjamin Zucker Family Collection" by Sandra Hindman; No. 344 in "Rings: Jewelry of Power, Love and Loyalty by Diana Scarisbrick". Measurement: 20.47mm overall, 16.17mm internal diameter. Table cut diamond: 4.02mm x 2.45mm; Rubies: ranges from 2.5mm to 2.2mm Ring size: 5.25-5.5. Very wearable size. As many of you know, most of the antique ring (esp. ancient ring) sizes are either very big or very small. The last thing I hate to do is to compromise a piece of history by resizing it. It took me many years to find a perfect ring that has the gems and details I love and fits my ring size.

Condition (provided by certified auction appraiser): very fine condition. Some minor loss to enamel to shoulders and rosette detailing to rim. Small fracture line to one ruby. Please see images for further details. Bonnie's observation: This ring is in an extremely well preserved condition with clear and crisp floral details along the ring shoulders. No sign of damage or repair. The type of enameling with its age wear and the slender D-section hoop are unique thumbprints of early-mid 17th century jewelry. The ring is not perfectly round due to the handmade nature and age, but extremely comfortable to wear. After some research, I am surprised by how few of these Jacobean pieces still exist and how rarely they show-up in the market. For those few pieces available for sale, all are highly priced at 10K or above.
